Is Action Enough to Rewire Your Mind?
Jun 13, 2024
Welcome back, blog fam; I am thrilled and grateful you are here.
First and foremost, if you prefer to LISTEN vs read - you can listen to this blog post on our podcast below.
The Belief in Action
I used to believe that ACTION was enough to overcome an unhelpful mindset.
I believed that if you did the thing enough, your mindset, whether naturally helpful or unhelpful, would shift over time. I had that belief because my life was proof of that truth for me in many ways.
Despite unhelpful thoughts roaming my mind,
Despite sometimes having a glass-half-empty perspective,
If I took action on what I desired, regardless of my mindset, things changed.
Programs were born, people enrolled, systems were built, and business was automated. The results of my actions often helped to inform and “reprogram my mindset.”
This is also reflected in a lot of my content from the last 3 years. If you scroll through my Instagram (linked here) you’ll see content that speaks to “if you spent half as much time as you do recite your affirmations on actually DOING the work in your business - your results would be a lot different, right now”
I said those things because they were true for me, and evidence of that truth was reflected to me via some of our clients, but not all of them.
The Role of Identity in Your Business
This is why I believe this concept is true in some ways - but not all.
You see, over the last 3 years, I’ve witnessed 100s of students enter our world with the desire for more. Some of them are able to create long-lasting change with a shit ton of action, and for others, action creates fleeting change.
And lately, I’ve been asking myself, “Why”?
What’s the difference between the people who take a shit ton of action & experience sustainable results and those who experience fleeting results?
Fun fact: I have Gate 33 in Human Design, the gate of being able to leverage past experiences to create transformation and understanding for the future. I’m also a 4/6 profile, which makes me incredible at observing others' behaviours and leveraging those observations to spot patterns among the collective to create change.
My Journey with Identity
The difference comes down to one word: IDENTITY.
The ones who can leverage action despite unhelpful mindsets to create long-term sustainable change have a strong sense of self-identity. They know who they are, what they’re capable of, and where they’re going, and they’re not shy about it. They claim themselves; they hold their power.
And it’s why they persevere despite unhelpful mental chatter, trolls, and doubts.
My life and the reason I have achieved incredible things simply by taking action despite a sometimes unhelpful mind follow suit.
I’ve always known who I am, what I am capable of, what I desire, and what I can achieve, and I know that I WILL achieve it. I’ve always known that I’m great with words, that I shine bright, that I get shit done & get it done right. There have been doubts and challenges at times, but I’ve always KNOWN that I will come out on top - one way or another.
If you do not have a strong sense of self-identity, it is very challenging to overcome mindset with action because you will always default back to how you see yourself—kind of like the “you can’t outexercise a bad diet” vibes.
Understanding Your Identity Through Human Design
So, my quest for us today is one of exploration.
Look within and be honest about whether or not you have a strong sense of self-identity. An easy way to know is to check your human design chart. You can get a copy of your human design chart here.
We're looking specifically at the G or IDENTITY Centre. This is the 4th shape from the top of your chart - the diamond.
Defined G-Center
If you have a defined G centre in human design, a strong sense of identity is your natural state. Saying things like “I don’t know” or “I’m lost” could indicate that you are not owning your power and what you know to be true about yourself.
I have a defined G centre, and over the last two years, most life-changing and emotionally manipulative breakup, I’ve found myself saying, “I don’t know who I am” and “I don’t know what I want” a lot.
When I said this to my mom a few days ago, she said to me - Cora-Lynn, ever since you were a little girl, you have ALWAYS known who you are. You have ALWAYS known what you wanted and had this never-ending well of conviction that you would one day be everything you desired, and then some - do not allow ANYONE to disconnect you from that.
Hearing that made something click and snap back into place, so if you have a defined G centre and you’re saying things like “I don’t know,” listen to me carefully.
You have always known who you are.
You have always known what you are capable of.
You have always been convinced of who you are becoming & you can claim that at any point.
You’re not lost, and you’re AFRAID of owning who you are because you’re afraid of what that might mean for the life you have right now and for the people around you.
But I can say this - the ones who are meant to stay do. The people who LOVE YOU will support you & all of your knowing will believe in you just as much. & Playing SMALL out of fear that others might not like you - is preventing SO MANY PEOPLE, people who need to see your BIGNESS, from claiming their own. Who you are, the conviction of who you are - has always and will always BE YOUR GIFT to the world.
& that strong sense of SELF will often be what others COME to you for. You will naturally attract people who are UNDEFINED and desire to BORROW your sense of self. People will hire you because you SHOW them who they can be and what’s possible, and you provide a constant and consistent example of what that looks like.
How a Defined G-Center Affects Your Coaching Business and Your Mindset Work
If you have a defined G-Centre, spending hours on your mindset can be a waste of time because your SOUL knows who you are and doing a ton of reinforcement work is unnecessary for you. Action will get you where you desire to go & your strong sense of self-identity will be there to hold you through navigating the results of that action, whether it is “good” or “bad”.
Simply saying things like “ I know who I am, I trust myself” is enough affirmation to keep you grounded and moving forward.
But what if your G-Centre is not defined? What if you don’t have a strong sense of self? What if your identity is in a constant state of change and fluctuation?
Undefined G-Center in Business
Your role is to own that, embrace it, and see it as the gift it is. Because it IS a gift. I cannot escape my ambitious, driven side if I try. It’s who I am, it’s who I’ve always been, and despite trying on the whole “chill person, I can live a normal life” identity, my drive always comes barreling back into me.
But you, you can try identities on to test the waters & explore who you are becoming.
& you can use this to your advantage in business by asking - who do I want to be this quarter/ in this offer / in this community & TRY IT ON.
For you, it’s less about knowing EXACTLY where you’re going or WHO YOU ARE as a whole and more about embracing and owning who you are and who you want to be in THIS moment, in THIS SEASON.
That means that if, for the next 3 months, you want to be ambitious and driven and an action taker, YOU CAN BE. If you want to be the feminine, soft, everything comes to her woman, YOU CAN BE.
But where this will not serve you is if you do not consistently COME back to your identity and shape shift and evolve it. Why? Because your identity is undefined, you CAN take on the identities of others - which again can work FOR or AGAINST YOU.
It works FOR YOU when you’re CONSCIOUS of this fact about yourself. If you hire or work with someone like me who has a strong sense of being ambitious, successful, action-oriented, you can BORROW that sense of identity and leverage it to accomplish what you desire.
But it works against you when you get into a relationship, for example, and find yourself slowly becoming someone you don’t want to be, or hire a coach and find yourself slowly morphing into them or becoming more and more like them. This is your undefined, UNGUIDED G-Centre latching on to their identity because you haven’t defined yours for this period of time.
How a Un-Defined G-Center Affects Your Coaching Business and Your Mindset Work
It also makes you INCREDIBLY aware of the identities of people. You have the gift of seeing who people TRULY are at their core & when you’re aware of this, you can use this to INSPIRE you - but when UNAWARE of it, your brain will use this as an avenue to COMPARE yourself to others, making you feel LESS THAN because you feel as if you don’t know yourself ENOUGH because you don’t have that same sense of CONVICTION.
In business, this is an incredibly powerful gift. You can see through the bullshit and see who people are & you can HOLD that vision with them. For me personally, if I ever hire a coach again, I will look for someone with an undefined G centre because I know that they will be able to see THROUGH whatever bullshit story I have at the moment and be able to REMIND me of who I am, guide me back home to my centre which we defined centres sometimes need - as my mom did for me the other day.
If you are undefined in this area, You are someone who would deeply benefit from spending some time each day in whatever way feels good to you - reminding yourself and grounding into WHO YOU ARE & who you want to be in THIS moment, defining your IDENTITY for the day, the week the hour & finding someone who mimics that identity so you can borrow their certainty to create clarity for yourself and before you go to bed at night, asking yourself if you’ve picked up any identity elements that are NOT serving you or that do not belong to you.
It will also deeply serve you to remember that you are not meant to stay one way forever; clinging to past versions of yourself, who you used to be, and how you used to move is not helpful & remembering that who you are is a conscious choice you get to make each day.
In business, being around people who get shit done, who are confident can greatly benefit you. Co-working sessions where you’re in the energy of getting shit done is incredibly helpful and supportive for you.
How Business & Identity Intersect
We started this conversation with the question of whether action alone can overcome mindset challenges. The answer is yes and no. The answer depends on YOU, your truth.
Because...
What I know now is that there is no TRUTH.
What works for me won’t work for everyone.
What’s true for me won’t be true for everyone & that’s INCREDIBLE.
But if we can become aware of ourselves, our identity, or lack thereof, in this moment, we can create great and incredible change both in our lives and in our business.
Business always has and always WILL BE, first, a foremost and insane exercise of personal development and understanding & the BETTER you understand yourself, the better you can leverage that information to grow your business, deeply serve your community & feel GREAT.
Please note that I am not an expert on human design. I am a dabbler at best. After a few years of dabbling into the subject and leveraging it in silence to support our clients, these are my interpretations. If you do not agree with my interpretations, that’s okay. Both of our thoughts, ideas and opinions can co-exist.
